The Best Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

It’s baking season you guys!! I don’t know about you, but once the weather starts to cool down I absolutely LOVE baking. It’s such a comfort for me after years of watching my mom and Granny bake the most delicious treats. And this is my favorite time of year to do it. Especially on Sunday afternoons, when football is on the TV and everyone is laying around in jimmies. I know a lot of you are probably the same way, so today I thought it would be fun to share THE best chocolate chip cookie recipe. This is actually my Granny’s recipe, who was the queen of sweets. She was a total pro when it came to baking and her cookies were amazing. I’ve been making this recipe for years now–it’s our family favorite!

The Best Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

  • 1.5 cups shortening (I use the Crisco butter flavored baking sticks)
  • 2 cups brown sugar (packed)
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 4 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • chocolate chips

Cream shortening, brown sugar, sugar and vanilla together. Add eggs and beat well. In a separate bowl combine together flour, baking soda, and salt. Then mix in dry ingredients and add chocolate chips. Done!

Bake at 375 degrees for 8-9 minutes. **I recommend cooking for 5 minutes on the middle rack, then switch to the upper rack for the last 4 minutes. Take the cookies out of the oven when they are ALMOST done cooking. Trust me, they will be gooey and perfect this way. Overcooking means dry cookies. Store in a plastic bag with a piece of bread to keep them soft!

Well I hope you give this recipe a try and let me know what you think. Also, if you haven’t tried freezing cookie dough I highly recommend it!! Just form the dough into balls and freeze on a cookie sheet. Once frozen, store all the balls in a ziplock baggie in the freezer. Then you can make a few cookies any time the craving strikes. Or if you’re a rebel like me you can just eat the frozen cookie dough, which is THE BEST THING EVER. Trust me.

This is my kind of post! I usually just make the Nestle Toll House with real butter and add extra flour for the Colorado altitude, but these look perfect! I’m definitely trying this recipe. Thanks Sarah!

Yummy! I will try it! Baking warms up the house too! We don’t have a heater yet so that’s what makes me bake! Lol
You could also make a log of the dough to freeze and score it, roll it up in wax paper, then freeze It in large zip locks and it will be easy to just cut a few off and bake as needed… 🍪🍪🍪yummy! Thx for recipe!

I would love to try this. When you say shortening do you mean the white Crisco?

Thanks for sharing, Sarah! My grandma also taught me a lot about cooking, and CC cookies were one of the first things I remember learning to make. I think it was the recipe from the Nestle chocolate chip bag. Over the years I have gotten lax about baking and use mostly store bought dough (or buy it from kids fundraisers!). I think it’s high time I made a batch from scratch! Thanks for the inspiration!

Yup!! Trying these. I’ve never heard of bread in a bag to keep soft 🤗 I’m excited. Will it work in a cookie jar too? I’m intrigued.

I am so excited to try this recipe. Every one I make turns delish but flat as a board. I think the crisco might solve that. Thanks for the great share!
