Well it’s taken us over four months, but I am SO excited to say that we finally painted the french door in the living room. EEEEKKK! I never thought it would take us this long, but I had a hard time deciding what exactly I wanted to do with this door. And then the holidays happened and it just go pushed off, but we finally painted it and I am SO excited to share the finished look with you guys today. Now if you remember from this post back in September, I switched out our chunky door for a pretty french door. It was actually a simple change, but it made a huge difference in our small room living room and it really lightened up the space. Here’s a super old photo of how it looked before (and when we still had yellow walls!).
Gosh, talk about a a blast from the past. That photo is from when I first started blogging! OK, fast forward a few years and here’s how it looked after we switched out that big white door for a french door:
Such a big change, right?! I left it natural like this for four months, but I wanted more contrast in this corner, so I decided to paint it. I went with my favorite shade of black–Wrought Iron by Benjamin Moore. Here’s how it looks now:
Another before:
And after:
As soon as we finished painting the door black I knew it was the right decision. I absolutely love it and I can’t believe what a difference it’s made in this corner. This is exactly what I envisioned when I first dreamed up this change and I’m just so happy with it!
I feel like a bit of a broken record, but I really do have an obsession with incorporating more black into our home. I think this is the fourth door we’ve painted black in the last year and I love them all. There’s just something about the contrast between the white walls and black door that I am really drawn to lately. Anyway, the added bonus of this change is that it makes our small living room feel SO much bigger and more open. I kinda feel like these photos don’t do it justice because it really made a HUGE change. And I have to say, it’s these type of easy, character-building projects that I love doing the most in our fixer upper!

Absolutely adorable! I’ve been wanting to change the color of my front door but nervous to go dark. This may have just given me the courage to go for it!
Ohhhh do it Pauline, you’ll love it!! It’s an easy change.
love, love,love it!
I LOVE IT!!! The contrast is beautiful and it makes a big difference! We painted our front door black a while back and I love it!
Thank you Melissa!! I am so happy with this change. Black was definitely the way to go!
oh yes, yes, yes. It looks fabulous!!!!!!
thank you Denise!!
It’s looks perfect, black! I’m trying to remember what I voted when you had a poll about what color your should paint it, stain it, or leave it natural. I think my top choice was black. Love it! Did you also get a new ottoman?
Hi Kyla, that ottoman is actually from Target! It’s in the release from Heart and Hand.
Love it! What color did you paint your wall?
Hi there, the walls are Alabaster by Sherwin Williams.
I LOVE it…isn’t it just incredible what paint will do to a space!?! Maybe that is what I love about DIY home projects…how custom we can make our spaces! It’s so fun!
Oh yes, I completely agree with you Dena!
I want to change the pantry door in my kitchen.my counter is white .my walls are grey and icy blue.wat colour shall I paint the door?
Hi, sounds very lovely. I would go with gun metal grey. Just a thought.
Tammy
Hmmm I actually think black could work. Depending on how blue your walls are!
I LOVE IT! That’s exactly what I would have done! Matter of fact, I have 2 French doors in my living room right now that have been white for 30 yrs when we built our home and recently I had decided to paint them black, but still trying to get my husband on board!! It’ll happen. Quick question for you though, you also painted some other doors in your home near your kitchen, right? Did you use the same Benjamin Moore color on those doors? I am trying to choose what black I want to go with. Eeeeek!
Yep, it was Wrought Iron by Benjamin Moore. That’s the color we’ve used on all our black doors.
LOVE IT!!!!!!!
We are painting my house all white, now its all shades in the brown family from light to dark, but now very shortly it will be all white. But now I will do the interior doors black I love it so much. But one suggestion that I have about your reading nook, I love the GATHER sign and it just looks so perfect that please put it back !!! Maybe because I am a two book a month reader I just love that space so much and wish I had one of my very own.
Enjoy a blessed day,
Love your blog friend
Tammy
haha I might have to put that Gather sign back in there. It did look good!!
HOORAY!!! This post made me so happy, since 2 days ago I picked up a quart of bm wrought iron to finally paint the inside of my front door!!
It looks great, Sarah… I was hoping you’d choose black! Now if I could just motivate myself 🤔
ohhhh yay!! That’s awesome Chris. Wrought Iron is the best black in my opinion!
I love a black door. I think it’s like mascara, putting that last finishing touch brings the whole beautiful look together. Well done.
Oh yessss, you’re so right Susan!! That’s exactly it.
beautiful! have you thought about maybe painting the two windows on either side of the pass-through also for a little more contrast in that area? just thinking…
I thought of that also !!!!!!!
great minds!!!!!
Tammy
Love the door!
thank you Joyce!
I love the door. I also noticed the chair or recliner from Walmart. Is it a comfortable chair?
Yes!! We love them. I will do a full review for them soon!
Hi Sarah
Well I fell in love with the French door when you first installed it four months ago and got the idea to do this for my laundry room. I love it painted in the black and looks awesome in your room with the contrast of the black lights. I have to get this done in my home now..thanks so much for sharing. I have written down the colour by BM
Oh that’s so awesome Candy. I bet your laundry room looks great!
Me again Sarah!
I forgot to ask you what paint by BM did you use. Is it a satin and for doors and trim..could you please let me know. Thanks so much and have an awesome day.
I believe it’s semi-gloss!
Hi! Looks fabulous! Quick question, Do you recall where you picked up your plaid pillows? So pretty!
Hi Kelly, those pillows are from Hobby Lobby 🙂
Thank you!
Omgoodness I love, love, love it! Lately I have had the same obsession with black and white aaaand gray! I’ve also kept little touches of red (only because it’s in some wall decor I just incorporated) I wasn’t sure weather I was liking a really dark gray or black though. We’re getting ready to paint the outside and the entire inside of my house! SOOOO many decisions 🤪 You and Joanna Gaines are my go-to when it comes to what’s in style, so thank you so much for your awesome blog! I truly love it!! ❤️
Oh wow, you definitely have some big decisions ahead of you Marcy! Good luck to you and thanks so much for the kind words. xo
Yes! Perfect colour!! It has just made such a difference, good choice 👍🏼
thank you Gayle, I’m so happy with it!
I am obsessed! Such a dramatic difference. Love it Sarah!
Right??! Kinda crazy what a little black paint can do.
I love the way the eye is drawn to the door then your barn lights! It was a great way to use black rather than leave it white!
Also I used to start my day reading upsetting news & the latest negative goings on. It wasn’t a good way to begin the day… now I check in to your blog & Instagram to get motivated & feel so much better.. & happier! Thank you Sarah!
Ah that makes me happy!! I have been avoiding the news lately too–it’s never good news!
The door looks fantastic. Getting around to painting the door does really finish off a room. Your use of different textures is gorgeous also!
Thank you Francesca, I really appreciate that!
I have painted my French doors but also several walls with Rodda paint color Subway. The contrast with our white trim is breathtaking. Our ceilings are 20 feet high so the dark walls don’t close the room. Be brave and try these dark colors!
Oh that sounds awesome Sheri!
Where did you get the botanical prints in your reading nook? Love them!
