One of the rooms I don’t share very often here on the ol’ blog is our small and functional mudroom. And the reasons for that are threefold: 1) it’s tiny and hard to photograph; 2) it doesn’t have a lot of natural light; 3) it usually looks like a HOT MESS. Plus on top of all that, it’s actually pretty basic. But it’s one of the must functional spaces in our entire home. We use it every single day and it usually feels like a war zone with bags, coats and shoes laying everywhere. It’s kinda like a black hole, but I finally cleaned it up this weekend and I snapped a few photos to share with you lovely folks today! I’ve also rounded up some of my favorite storage bins too.
When we moved in five years ago this mudroom was painted a dark color. I wanted to freshen it up, so we painted it with Alabaster by Sherwin Williams, which is my favorite white paint color–it’s warm and cozy without being too white. We also added in that shiplap and the coat hooks. It’s been such a handy space for our family!
Over the years I’ve become obsessed with wicker baskets. I have SO many of them in our home, but I feel like they can be used for a ton of different things. AND they never go out of style. I mean, I have wicker baskets I bought years ago that I still use. They’re timeless and functional! The ones I have in our small and functional mudroom are perfect for organizing all kinds of things–we have papers and mail in one of the baskets, my running gear in another, etc. And that small one in the middle is for the kids’ socks. I like to keep a few extra pairs in there so they’re always ready for shoes!
Even though this isn’t the biggest or fanciest mudroom, I’ve sure loved this little space over the last few years. And now I’m reallllllly hoping our next home has a mudroom like this one–or at least an area I can convert into a small and functional mudroom. It’s just so dang handy, I can’t imagine life without it! I hope this gives you a few ideas for your own home. And here are a few of my favorite storage bings and baskets if you’re in the mood for any organization!
MORE STORAGE BINS + BASKETS:
Gorgeous, and soon useful! I like the seat in the room so you could easily take your shoes off and store them safely. Good for 6′ social distancing, too! I wish we had a mud room!
Sarah Joy,
I absolutely adore your blog posts! The first time I saw you name, I automatically was interested b/c we have a precious adopted 2yr old grand with same name and I love it! Your blogs are so inspiring. I love farmhouse but have a lot of dark in my house. Could you give some hints on how to incorporate dark furniture w/o painting white?
I love the baskets from Target. I have a ton of them and I agree they are great for storage. Love your little mud room.
What a beautiful little space! I wish mine was as stylish! I totally agree about the baskets, I love them so much too. Also, yes don’t know how I’d live without a mudroom either! I have 4 kids under 10 and the shoes, coats, etc. seem to multiply by the hour I swear! We have a set of 5 school lockers we found at a salvage place before I was pregnant with my 4th so we actually need another one! They are awesome at containing all the things. Anywho, your mudroom is lovely and I hope you find a new house that has one!
Love the Mud Room! Would you mind sharing where you found the numbered coat hooks.
Looks great, Sarah
