Farmhouse Style Family Command Center

Hey hey and happy Monday guys! How was your weekend?! I sure hope it was relaxing and you’re starting the new week bright-eyed and full of spunk this morning. And ideally well caffeinated too. You know, if you’re into that kind of thing. Today I’m excited to share our farmhouse style family command center. I’ve been wanting to create one of these in our home for a long time now, I just never got around to doing it. But now that my son is in school everyday, I knew it was time to get my act together and actually get myself organized. I wanted a place in our home for everyone to keep track of our different schedules, important dates, school papers, deadlines, etc. I originally wanted to put it in our kitchen, but since we’re pretty tight on space in there I figured the hallway between our mudroom and front door would make the perfect spot. It’s the first thing we all see when we walk down the stairs in the morning, so it seemed like a natural fit for a little family command center.

I didn’t have much space to work with, but I put this simple command center together using a few vintage pieces, like the old window and the shutter, with a couple of new things. I wanted to make sure we had baskets for important papers, so when I found these really cool wall baskets I knew they were perfect–they’re just the right size for this spot. Once I had them hung up I added the little chalkboards to the front.

That’s an old 3-panel window there on the left that I turned into a dry erase board. I also added a cork board in the middle, which is super handy. If you’re curious about all the stars it’s actually our chore chart for the kids. We give them stars when they help around the house or do nice things for someone else in the family. We also take stars away when they’re disobedient. Then when they earn 15 stars we let them get a small toy or take them to do something special. It’s super simple, but very motivating for my kiddos. They love earning their stars and they have a complete meltdown if they lose a star for any reason. Works like a charm!

I found this awesome chalkboard calendar the other day and I looooooove it. It’s exactly what I wanted for this spot–it’s super easy to write on and it I really like how it has the empty area on the right side. I thought that would be a good place to highlight important things that are coming up each week or write out any goals we have as a family.

I love the fact that this hallway space isn’t very big, but I was able to make it work as a functional and organized family command center. And I’ll be honest with you guys, I’m not the best at staying on top of important dates like school picture day or back to school night. I usually remember last minute and then I’m scrambling around like a crazy lady. So having those kinds of things written on a large calendar that stares me in the face every time I walk down the stairs is going to be super helpful. I need all the reminders I can get. And I love having the wall baskets here too. Hopefully that means I won’t be putting important papers in random places anymore. All good things!

So glad to have you drop by the blog today, I hope you all have an amazing week!

Another great idea Sarah! I’m sure lots of us mums will find it helpful. I don’t know how you do it, especially with one at kindy and a new baby in the house. Love your blog and look forward to reading what you’ve been up to. I kinda feel like I’m getting to know you. God bless you as you squeeze it all into your day.

Yes they are chalk pens. They’re awesome! They actually came with the chalkboard calendar I bought, and the smaller white chalkboard below came with them too.

I came here from Pinterest to see your command center…but what caught my eye is the drapes hung in the background! Ok, what do you have the small ring clips hanging from on your larger rod? I’ve been all over my town today looking for large ring clips for the large rod but cannot find them anywhere! Please share how you have yours hung?!?!

I couldn’t find any large rings either so I just used a bit of twine to hang the clips from around the curtain rod! Not ideal but an easy fix!

Gah! Kim, I am so sorry. I think I had the size wrong. I thought I bought the medium size, but when I measured them just now they’re actually the small. I’m so sorry, I must have been confused on the size!
