Happpppy June my friends! I don’t know about you, but I’m in a bit of denial that this year is already halfway over. I mean, how did that even happen? Really, something fishy is going on. It’s like God is secretly speeding time up on the Master Timepiece, meanwhile I’m running around like a crazy person, barely aware of what month it is before it’s time to start all over again. That’s my first theory. I won’t bore you with the others. Either way, drinking more coffee is probably the answer, right? I think so. Anyway, today I’m sharing our farmhouse living room summer refresh. I love this little room. It’s just so darn cozy and cute. And thanks to our giant window, it’s usually filled to the brim with sunshine. I recently made a few changes to this space and I’m really digging the new fresh look for summer.
I wish you could come over for an afternoon cookie and enjoy this room with me. The windows are open, I can hear birds singing outside, sunshine is streaming in, and the scent of the lilacs in the yard is coming in with the breeze…Magical, right? Don’t mind the fact that I conveniently forgot to mention the sound of my children fighting over a toy in the kitchen. But other than that it’s perfectly serene!
I left all of the furniture in the same place for this little refresh, but I changed out almost all of the accent pieces. I even brought up that old door from our guest room. I feel like she was lonely down in that room all by herself, so it was time to bring her up. I love this door because it’s still in really good shape, plus it still has the skeleton key. Look closely and you’ll see it. I spruced it up a bit with the Live Simply sign from The Painted Nest.
Yep, there’s more of that old porch railing I found a few weeks back. Don’t judge me, I can’t help it. I’m now completely addicted to decorating with porch railings and spindles. I love it paired with this adorable cotton muslin rag wreath from this cute little shop.
I tied the curtains back with a piece of twine to let more sunlight in. Somehow that little change makes everything feel a lot more open and the window definitely seems bigger with the curtains tied back. Give it a try, you might like it.
And here’s the star of the show: Granny’s old trunk. I had this in our front room for months, but I recently moved it in here and this baby pretty much dominates the room. I posted this photo on Instagram and I’ve had so many questions about the trunk. We actually didn’t refinish it, I left it just as Granny had it. And I plan to keep it that way. It definitely has some wear and tear on it, as you can see if you look closely, but I love it just the way it is. Granny had this trunk in her living room for years and years, where she also used it as a coffee table. I have so many memories of this trunk growing up. She always had a wooden duck and a cup of sweet tea sitting on it. I’m very blessed to have it in my home now!
If you’re wondering where all the toys are for my little people, they’re all packed into the storage area in the reading nook. Toys, books, blankets, all the things go in here. It’s SO nice and helps keep this room organized. Check out how we made the reading nook in this post.
My goal for this little refresh was to keep things simple and clean. Summer makes me think of lazy days and easy livin’, so I wanted this room to reflect that. I don’t believe in changing all your decor with every new season, but it is fun to swap out a few pieces here and there to freshen things up. I’ve said it a million times, but shopping what you already have is such a fun and easy way to change up the look of any room. And if you’d like to get a closer look at the mantel, just stay tuned. I’ll be sharing that soon!
Thanks for coming over and be sure to let me know what you think of my little refresh in the comments. And don’t be a stranger, let’s be friends on Facebook and Instagram.

Love the curtains! And the reading nook, and the door, and that trunk!!!! Everything looks so clean and fresh!! Time to purge and simplify my family room 🙂
So elegant & refreshing! The yellow, grey & white color scheme is totally appealing and giving a perfect summer look. You can also use a light yellow-white colored tapestry as the curtains for the windows and doors.
What color is that on the walls
It is Autumn Blonde by Sherwin Williams.
Love the area rug! Where did you find it?
Thanks! I got it from Target, but I don’t think they carry this exact one anymore. I have several similar suggestions here: https://sarahjoyblog.com/transitioning-farmhouse-style/
Couch and chairs!!! Where they from?
Hi Heather! The couch is from Lazy Boy Furniture and the chairs are from American Furniture Warehouse. I have similar options in this post: https://sarahjoyblog.com/transitioning-farmhouse-style/
Just out of curiosity – do you have any idea what the dimensions of your living room are? We’re in the middle of a renovation which led me to your post and you worked around all your doors, windows and doorways wonderfully!
I absolutely love your style! I saw you said your couch is from lazy boy. Do you happen to remember if it’s called the Brennan?? Thanks!
Yes! That’s the one. And I believe the color of the fabric is Bark. You can see it here: https://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/8138279/type/dlg/https://www.la-z-boy.com/p/sofas/brennan-premier-sofa/_/R-610657
I like it! I have been pulling in more yellow and light green. I found some yellow lamps to use as bedside table lamps at a thrift store earlier today. They are the same yellow shade as your curtains. I like what you have done!
Sounds perfect Tracie, I think yellow is perfect for summer!
what size rug is in your living room? Looks like exact size I need.
Hi Ashley, I think it’s a 7×9!
