Hey friends! Today I have a fun and easy farmhouse cabinet makeover for you lovely people. I’m pretty excited about this post because it’s been a while since I had a good old-fashioned furniture flip here on the blog. This project reminded me just how much I love DIY and repurposing old, forgotten things. I actually saw this little cabinet in my favorite local thrift store about a month ago. It definitely caught my eye. I mean, it was a real humdinger. But I passed it up at the time. Well I dropped in again last weekend and found this baby marked down to 50% off. It was practically begging me to take it home. I really had no choice. I call it my Pooh cabinet and here’s why:
I mean, c’mon. Someone put a lot of time and effort into painting that happy Winnie the Pooh scene. Bless her heart.
So my first step in this makeover was removing the doors. Bye bye Pooh bear!
Then I simply sanded down the sides where the hardware was before and filled in the holes with basic wall putty. Easy peasy. Next up was paint. I wanted a classic farmhouse look, so I went with Annie Sloan chalk paint in Country Grey and a basic white for the top.
Here’s the finished look! Pretty darn cute, right?
I was really pleased with how well the putty filled in the holes on the sides. You can’t even tell it had doors before!
I did slightly distress the cabinet on the sides and corners with sandpaper. I can’t help it. I must distress all the things.
Since this drawer was covered in dark paint and writing, I decided to use a quick coat of KILZ primer just in that area before I painted it gray. I wanted to make sure none of the writing could be seen through the paint when I was finished.
How easy was that? This actually works SO well in this corner of our dining room. It’s the perfect size to fill in that area and give me a bit of storage, without being too big. I think the whole thing took maybe an hour and a half at most. It was the perfect little weekend project! Although I will say my son is still mad at me for taking away Pooh bear. Poor kid.
Well friends, that’s what I’ve got for you today. Like I said earlier, these types of easy makeovers remind me why I love DIY so much. I got this cabinet for $24, put a bit of work into it, and now I have a fresh new piece of furniture that is exactly what I needed for this room. That’s a win in my book. Thank you SO much for dropping by today. Let me know if you have any questions and I’d love to hear what you think of this little before and after!

That is adorable Sarah.
Thank you Linda!
OMG! I love it.
Thanks Bev!
I love a good before and after! Such a cute piece that looks wonderful with your farmhouse decor!
Me too Ellen! Furniture flips are one of my favorite things to do!
Nice job. It is adorable
Thank you Alice!
Cute! Did you use wax at the end?
I sure did Sara, I used Annie Sloan clear wax!
Nicely done! It is great! So I have questions about your paint.
You said on another post you used SW Autumn Blonde on your walls?
And this piece is Sloan Country Grey, but it appears more like the wall color. Is it?
I love the colors, and I’m currently using a similar light version on my new house, after having it for 10 years in my old one. I want to bring in more Mink tones of grey as accents like your dining room chairs. Is your bathroom also the dining room color? I love that bathroom. I was planning to use SW Calico Cream on my walls in bedroom and bath…my vanities are stained a chestnut walnut, with crema marfil marble tops, I don’t want to paint them, and plan for tub surround that sits separate from shower between them to have matching stained wood around it, with faux painted tub deck, like counters. Adding in Mink towels, metal assessories, and Mink at bed with throw pillows. How can I add more Mink, suggestions welcome? Carpet in bedroom matches wall color, tile in bath has wall colors, Mink, and lighter cream, with a tad of a light rusty shades blended like stone pattern. I need to do something with nightstands and dresser…currently dark stained, might paint over? Or sand a lot of stain away to raw pine, 40 yrs old so it’s not yellow, it aged wood tones. I used the oval mirrors from it at vanities. Thank you for suggestions, your followers are welcome to chime in as well. Blessings!
Hi Faith! This is painted with chalk paint in Country Grey. I did use a clear wax over it, which darkened it up a bit, but it is grey. I can see how the color does look somewhat similar to the wall color in these photos, but it’s definitely not! I think your plan for your bathroom sounds really nice. (Our bathroom is actually painted in Smokestack by Behr by the way) It sounds like the deck around your tub is going to be amazing. I’d start with the amount of mink you have and add in more accents if you think it needs it. I’d definitely consider painting you nightstand and dresser if you’re looking to make a change. It’s amazing what a new coat of paint can do to bring new life to an old piece like that. If you use chalk paint you shouldn’t need to sand anything down. Otherwise I’d probably start with a primer then move on to regular latex paint from there. Good luck to you!!
I’m in love with this cabinet!!
Thanks Morgan, me too!
I love it. Top looks like it is enamel.
You’re right Sally, it kind of does in these photos!
I laughed out loud when I saw the pic after you called it your Pooh cabinet. Yup, that it was! Great job seeing potential that others might not see!
Haha, right Leigh?! Poor Pooh bear. There was even a sweet note painted on the inside of one of the doors. “From Granny, with love”. Gah! I felt bad for a few seconds.
Super cute! What a good idea to take the doors off!
thank you Mary! 🙂
You are so talented! I like your style and the cabinet looks great!
Aw thanks so much Steph!
Awesome job!
Thanks DJ!
I love it!! I have no clue in painting but you inspire me to try.
Thank you.
Oh Kathy, trust me. You can do it! I promise, it’s not that hard! Go for it.
This is fabulous Sarah! Genius to take the doors off and looks like it’s be in your home forever!x
Thank you so much Helen!
Absolutely love it- I just painted my piano with Annie Sloan (old white) the other day. First time doing a furniture flip and I loved it! So so easy and so was the waxing. Definetly inspired by your blog!
Wow, I bet that piano looks amazing now. I love Old White, it’s probably my favorite Annie Sloan color. Good work Rebecca!
I absolutely love it!!!!????????
What an awesome transformation. I love how it turned out girl 🙂
Very creative. I love furniture flips. Thanks for sharing.
So pretty! Where did u find the white pitchers and the table scale?
Those are all vintage finds actually. All from auctions, yard sales, and thrift stores.
Sarah, I grew up with a mother(93 now and she still yard sales!) who loves antiques and I have inherited her thrifty ways; I always have had some vintage looks in every room. Your blog has made me look at the potential in everthing I see. Never would have thought to take those doors off. What an adorable cabinet! I live in Maine, can’t wait for yard sales to start!
Thanks for the daily ideas, can’t believe you can fit it into what must be a very busy life!
Aw that’s so awesome Betty! I love that your mother is 93 years old and still yard sales. Such a fun hobby to do together! And thank you so much for reading my blog, I’m happy to have you here. xoxo
This is a perfect solution for the corner in my living room. I have an end table, but I need something more than one level to make it look “right”. Thanks for the idea!
