Indoor Playhouse DIY Project

One of the quirky things I love about this house is that its full of random nooks/alcoves. At first sight they’re not the most glamorous thing in the world, but there’s so much potential in these little spots. Today I am sharing how we transformed an empty alcove into an indoor playhouse in our basement.

Here’s the empty space before. Definitely not attractive.

Despite their lack of appeal, I see these little awkward spaces as a chance to be creative. With this one, I wanted to make this something special for our kiddos. I kicked around several ideas–should we add shelves and make it a little library? Maybe throw a table in for tea parties? What about a tipi and make it like a little hut?

Nothing seemed good enough. So of course I sought out the help of Pinterest, as all humans do. After hours of searching, I finally found the idea of building an indoor playhouse. Ah-ha! Perfect use of the space.

Thankfully, my father-in-law is amazing when it comes to woodworking. So naturally, I sent him a photo of what I wanted, all the measurements, and begged for his help. He obliged. He’s a gem like that. And this is what he, and my mother-in-law, came up with:

Amazing, right? Basically the idea was to build the face of the indoor playhouse and screw it over the nook.

Simple!

Easy!

And a dream come true for my kids. And me, because let’s face it–I love playing in this just as much as they do.

We left it with the natural wood for a few weeks, but I couldn’t shake the idea of sprucing it up a bit. So I painted it and added curtains.

Just because every house needs a little curb appeal.
