Devotional: Searching for One

I’ve recently become fascinated with Psalm 23. It’s easily one of the most well known passages of Scripture in the entire Bible. I just love the symbolism of God being our Good Shepherd, leading us through the highs and lows of life with the utmost care and protection. It’s a super powerful visual. And even more, it’s a consistent theme that pops up all throughout the Old Testament and the New Testament–particularly in several of the parables Jesus told His followers. I love the parable of the shepherd who has one hundred sheep and one goes missing. The shepherd leaves the ninety-nine to search for the lost sheep:

“If you had 100 sheep and one of them strayed away and was lost in the wilderness, wouldn’t you leave the ninety-nine others to go and search for the lost one until you found it? And then you would joyfully carry it home on your shoulders.” Luke 15:3-5

There’s so much significance to unpack in those words Jesus spoke, but you know what’s really amazing and sometimes overlooked? In searching for the lost one, Jesus gave the other ninety-nine sheep the great confidence and assurance to know that “if I get lost, He will come after me. If I go astray, He will come and find me. He will not let me go.” All the lost little sheep has to do is cry out to his shepherd and surrender to being found—the shepherd WILL come and carry the sheep home.

I love this perspective because it’s a powerful reminder that Jesus sees so much value in each and every one of us–to Him, the search is worth the risk. It pains Him to know that one of his flock is out there alone and lost, so He’s willing to risk it all to bring the one home. I don’t know about you, but I started bawling when these dots connected for me this week. And it calmed so many of my fears. Jesus is so much better than we could ever fully comprehend and He is the only shepherd I ever want leading me through this life.

I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me—just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.” John 10:14-15
