Devotional: No Longer an Orphan

Several weeks ago I was watching an old movie with my kids called It Takes Two. It’s a super cute show that follows two identical little girls–one belongs to a very wealthy family and the other is living in an orphanage in New York City. At one point the girls randomly meet each other and trade places. While they’re swapped, the wealthy girl (who was pretending to be the orphan) gets adopted into a mean family that treats her like a slave. She’s forced to work in a junkyard, covered in filth. One day she tells this family they’ve got the wrong girl–she actually has a very wealthy father who will surely come to save her at any moment. They of course laugh and mock her, but sure enough in just a few minutes a fancy helicopter lands in the middle of the junkyard to save her.

The little girl is rescued and her correct identity as the daughter of a wealthy, powerful man in confirmed. As I was watching that scene play out I couldn’t help but feel like it was a perfect example of how the Lord calls us into His own family. He literally comes into the middle of our story, saves us from the junkyard and all the filth we exist in, to adopt us as His very own child. We are freely given that inheritance and honor of being His son or daughter.

“So you should not behave like cowering, fearful slaves. You should behave instead like God’s very own children, adopted into his family–calling him “Father, dear Father”. For His Holy Spirit speaks to us deep in our hearts and tells us that we are God’s children.” Romans 8:15-16

Why is it so easy for us to forget that as a child of God, we have an incredible inheritance of power, strength, and righteousness? Our identity is no longer that of a cowering orphan, covered in filth and stuck in fear and shame. No, we are set FREE. We are Chosen. Loved. Ransomed. Saved. Redeemed. We have officially been adopted by the most powerful Father–one who keeps His promises and loves without end.

And now we have gained all the rights of being a member of His family–we are full heirs to the privileges that come with being a child of God. No one can put us back in chains. And no one, not even the enemy, can separate us from our Father’s love and protection. We are unstoppable.

On those days when we feel ourselves slipping back into the orphan mentality, let’s remember Romans 8:15-16. And let’s ask the Lord, through the power of the Holy Spirit, to speak to us deep in our hearts and remind us who we really are:

a daughter of the KING.
