Devotional: He Said “Let Me Teach You”
One of my favorite verses in the entire Bible is a passage spoken by Jesus himself, where He promises rest for our soul. It’s a verse I’ve read many times throughout my life and I bet you have too. But when I came across this verse on a random morning back in June, it really stuck with me for a specific reason and I wanted to share that today. Here’s the verse:
Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
I can’t help but feel a huge sense of relief when I read those words. Jesus, the King of all Kings, wants to take our burdens. He wants to carry the weight of our problems, worries, and fears so we don’t have to. It’s an incredible invitation. But the part I recently got hung up on is this, “let me teach you”. Have you ever stopped to think about those four words and what they really mean for us?
The definition of teach is to show or explain to someone how to do something. Jesus wants to teach us how to live. He wants to be our coach, our guide, our mentor, our counselor.
I don’t know about you, but that gets me really excited. I want Jesus to teach me everything. And after reading that verse and seeing those words pop out at me in a new way a few months ago, I’ve made it a habit to pray for Jesus to teach me all the things I want to learn, both big and small.
Teach me how to think.
Teach me how to focus on the good.
Teach me how to trust you fully.
Teach me how to know your love for me.
Teach me how to live without fear.
Teach me how to see things with your perspective.
Teach me how to have a good attitude.
Teach me how to not worry.
Teach me how to grow in my relationship with you.
Teach me how to overcome challenges.
Teach me how to live in a better way.
Teach me how to believe in myself the way you do.
Teach me how to start my day.
Teach me how to end my day.
Teach me to ignore the voice of the enemy.
Teach me to put on your armor every day.
Teach me to live life to the fullest.
Teach me how to stand my ground.
Teach me to walk in confidence.
Teach me how to be the best mom and wife I can be.
Teach me how to do my job in a way that glorifies you.
Teach me how to forgive others.
Teach me how to live with your joy.
Teach me how to live with peace.
Teach me how to be unstoppable.
Teach me how to make good decisions.
Teach me how to be fearless.
Teach me how to live to glorify you.
I want Jesus to teach me everything. I have so much to learn, so much room for growth, so much more I could experience in my relationship with the Lord. And it’s just amazing that He is ready and eager to show us the way–to guide us to a better way of going through each day. We just have to ask Him.
“I am telling you these things now while I am still with you. But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.” John 14:25-26

Regarding teaching, I’ve always liked the imagery of Proverbs:
“For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching [torah] a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life” (Proverbs 6:23, ESV)
And the parallel in John:
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6, ESV)
