Devotional: Follow Close Behind

One of the perks of traveling with my husband is that he tends to take charge of all the details. In fact, I’ve become quite accustomed to simply following behind him in the airport–turning when he turns, going where he goes–all without worrying about a thing or even asking any questions. I fully trust that he knows where we’re going and what we need to do, so all that’s required of me (and the kids) is to simply follow along and keep up. What would normally be a stressful situation becomes enjoyable and relaxing because he bares the burden of figuring things out–and he always gets us right where we need to be. I know that if Matt’s with us, we’ll be ok. His presence gives me comfort. Last week as we were walking through the airport, with the usual view of following Matt as he weaved in and out of the crowds, a certain verse popped into my head:

“I think how much you have helped me; I sing for joy in the shadow of your protecting wings. I follow close behind you; your strong right hand holds me securely.” Psalm 63:7-8

Once I was reminded of that verse, I couldn’t help but feel a new sense of relief as I imagined the LORD leading me through life, just like Matt leads us through the airport. While it might be a simple comparison, I realized right in that moment how deeply God wants me to follow closely behind Him, without hesitation or doubt, just like I follow Matt when we’re traveling. It helped me visualize my Heavenly Father walking in front of me with confidence and ease, simply asking me to trust Him without questioning every turn or worrying about what’s ahead.

Surrendering to the Lord isn’t always easy, especially in the valleys when discouragement kicks in and we wonder why the breakthrough is taking so long. Or in the hardships, when we question if things will ever get better. But for me, this simple visual was a powerful reminder that God is fully capable of guiding me through the twists and turns of life. Even more, He’s willing to carry all the stress on Himself so I can simply follow, without panicking over every bump in the road or every long line we come up to. I know He’s got me. And I’m so grateful that He never leaves me alone to figure it out.

Dear Jesus, thank you for this reminder that you are a loving, protective Father who wants to lead me through life. Please help me fully surrender more and more of my heart to you, trading all my fears for your peace. Thank you for carrying my burdens and guiding me on the best path, so I can simply follow you. And thank you for always being with me and never leaving me alone. I love you.
