Devotional: Ask For More

We rented a house on the beach two weeks ago and it was glorious. I sat on the porch and gazed out at the ocean every morning and every night. As I was watching the waves come and go over and over one morning, I asked the Lord to show me how His love is like the ocean. To be honest, at first I felt kind of silly even asking that question, but almost immediately my mind was flooded with so many beautiful visuals.

His love never stops.
His love is deeper than we could fathom.
His love washes over us like a wave.
The deeper you go into His love, the more you discover.
His love refreshes our soul.

I was so moved by these simple examples of how God’s love is like the ocean. And it reminded me that sometimes we get so caught up in doing all the talking in our prayer time, that we forget to stop and ask God to speak to our hearts. I’ve learned over the last couple of years that simply asking God to help me understand something, or even asking what He wants me to know about a situation or struggle I’m facing, can have really profound results. He always shows up. He always delivers, we just have to humble ourselves enough to hear His response.

It’s such a beautiful privilege to be able to communicate directly with our Creator. So let’s ask more questions.

Let’s ask for more understanding.
Let’s ask for eyes to see, ears to hear, and a heart to know Him more.
Let’s ask the Lord to remind us of times He took care of us, even when we didn’t realize it.
Let’s ask to know what He says about us, instead of what the world says.
Let’s ask to see His love surrounding us every day, in simple yet profound ways.
Let’s ask Him to help us understand the enemy’s schemes against us.
Let’s ask the Lord to show us anything in our lives that is keeping us from growing
in our relationship with Him.
Let’s ask Jesus to teach us how to rely on His strength and not our own.

“For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And the door is opened to everyone who knocks.” Matthew 7:8

“Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:29
