One of my favorite things about this blog is getting the opportunity to chat with you, my lovely readers, through email, the comment section, or even over on Facebook and Instagram. You’re all so darn awesome, I wish I could hug each and every one of you. (But if that seems like too much for you we can just high-five and play it cool.) It’s just so fun and truly the best part about blogging, if you ask me. And what’s really awesome is that you guys actually give me lots of ideas for blog posts. High five to that! Lately I’ve had a few questions about coming up with creative ways to decorate the empty wall space above your sofa. In fact, I think I had three people in the same week ask me for advice on this topic, which I thought was a little crazy. So I figured there had to be more of you wondering this same thing. I actually don’t have any of our sofas up against an empty wall, so I’ve done what any good blogger does and I’ve scoured Pinterest and Instagram for hours to find inspiration for you. I’m happy to say I’ve found 10 really creative and amazing ways to decorate this spot with lots of character and farmhouse charm. Let me show you what I found!
Old Door
The first one I have to show you is this crazy creative idea from Becky at Buckets of Burlap. She hung an old door above her couch and I think it’s genius. Great idea and adds to much character to this space!
Floating Shelf
This large floating shelf and sign combo from Angela’s Cozy Home on Instagram is perfect. I love that it’s one large shelf, instead of a few smaller ones like you usually see. The longer shelf gives lots of space for decor–and how fun to change it up with the seasons.
Chalkboard
This old chalkboard and pair of mounted lamps has me drooling a bit. I mean, this is the perfect farmhouse look. Liz Marie Blog is always overflowing with inspiration, but you probably know that already unless you’ve been living under a rock.
Family Photos
This creative gallery wall made of sweet family photos and a wooden arrow from Love Grows Wild is a great way to fill up empty space and display a little bit of your heart at the same time. Each piece has a story and I love that.
Humongous Shutters
You can’t get much more perfect than Joanna Gaines’ farmhouse. And how amazing are these giant shutters? I’m not sure where one finds such humongous shutters, but I want them. This look is simple and easy, but she nailed it, as usual. You can see a full tour of her home here.
Oversized Clock
You can’t go wrong with an oversized clock. You just can’t. And a galvanized one like this is even better. I found this beauty on Pinterest–so many good things happening here, I love every detail.
Vintage Finds
I absolutely adore this combination of vintage finds from Better Homes and Gardens. This is the ideal spot to display some of your favorite found treasures. Just start with an old sign and work around it. BOOM.
Goodness gracious this photo from The Modest Farmhouse on Instagram in absolutely gorgeous. I love the large mirror and metal wall vases. The entire space is perfectly done, it’s so calming and peaceful.
Picket Fence & Bed Frames
These last two ideas (check out the photo below) are from JoEllen at The Rustic Farmhouse on Instagram. I mean, how darn creative are these two displays? I’m absolutely obsessed with these both, but I think the one with the old wooden crib frame is my favorite idea of the whole entire bunch. AMAZING.
Well my friends, I hope this has given you some inspiration! Now I’m sitting here wishing I had one of my couches up against a wall so I could use some of these ideas too. But really, all of these looks can be done on just about any empty wall. I think they key is being creative and thinking outside the box. Don’t be afraid to be different, it’s more fun that way. Well let me know what you think of these ideas or if you’ve come up with something stellar over your sofa, I’d love to hear about it! xoxo

I just love the way your readers can count on you – If you don’t have the answer …..you’ll go find it . Thank you.
Thanks sweet Marilyn, you’re awesome!
Hi Sarah, I just recently found your sight…and I love it. Your home is so serene and reflects your spirituality. I read on your blog about how to transition to farm house. I’m one of those people who love color and I have enormous brown leather couch. This should be an interesting challenge. Thanks Sarah.
Hi Valeri! So glad to have you here. Keep in mind with farmhouse decor you don’t have to stick to neutrals colors–you can mix them in here and there. I personally use a lot of yellow in our home. You can mix in color if that’s what you love. I always say do what you love when you’re styling your home. Good luck to you!
Thank you so much for this very timely post, Sarah!! The area above my sofa is the last wall I need to decorate in my new home, so this post couldn’t have come at a better time. I love all the ideas so the real challenge is picking one of them. You are amazing and awesome and very much appreciated!!
Yay! Glad it was helpful Gayle 🙂
All great ideas! Thanks for the post 🙂 Maybe you could do one about designing above and around a TV next?!
Great idea Kate, I’ll write that one on my list of blog post ideas! 🙂
Another great idea is a large 20 pane vintage window with a wreath in the center!
I love all of these ideas!!! I agree with Kate. Let’s see around the TV! That’s always a struggle for me.
It’s on my list!
What a wonderful round up Sarah. We had same issue at our house and I couldn’t figure out what to put over our couch. I ended up doing a simple wall gallery but now that I saw all of these great ideas I might have to switch up again. Thanks for sharing!
Sarah, what a great post! So many helpful ideas to inspire your readers!
I think perhaps that the large “shutters” in Joanna’s home are actually those attic vents found on the gable ends of older houses. They provide air circulation for attics.
Thank you! Found this gem and so happy i did! I have my grandmoms❤ antique spindle bed, don’t “use” it but don’t want to let it go. Now i can use the headboard for a bench and the footboard over my couch on the wall!!!!!!! Many thanks!!

I’m looking for ideas to post family vacation/ travel photos that goes along with cozy, farmhouse decor. Any thoughts?
Hi Sarah, do you have any idea where to get nice, white farmhouse or coastal looking sofa and couch slipcovers? I see some lovely ones in these photos but am having the hardest time finding ones that don’t look cheap or sloppy. Appreciate any thoughts you have!
